INTERVIEW OF THE POTENTIAL WIND TURBINE ENERGY IN MALAYSIA

For our interview We have  met Mr Ir. G Lalchand He has been in the electric power supply industry for about 49 years (37 years with TNB LLN & CEB and on contract assignments after his mandatory retirement). He was involved with Danish Consultants on energy projects as the local Consultant on EE & RE studies, and design of the LEO Building for KeTTHA (1999 to 2001), and the EE/DSM Capacity Building project at ST (Suruhanjaya Tenaga, 2002 to 2005). He served as a Technical Advisor (Policy Development) for the MBIPV project (2006 to 2010) including work on development of the RE Act, formulation of the NEEMP (National EE Master Plan) and representong KeTTHA at the PEMANDU NKEA Lab for EPP-9 (Energy Efficiency) in 2010.He led the IEM’s Position Paper Committee on EE and is still involved in other IEM PP Committees (for “Water & Environment” and “Green Technology”). He was involved in the development of Malaysia's first grid connected biomass power plant in Sabah and is a passionate supporter of EE and RE development in Malaysia. He is an Associate of the Akademi Sains Malaysia and an Advisor to the FMM-MIMG (FMM – Malaysian Insulation Manufacturers Group).

During the interview, we ask him about the the research that had been done in Pulau Perhentian. He can't really say much because he need to see the performance statistic of the energy produce by the wind turbine from Tenaga Nasional Berhad(TNB) but unfortunately they can't, as the figures belonged to the state government. But based on his knowledge, around 80 % energy come from the solar farm and diesel. During the whole interview, he conclude that wind energy can be used to generate electricity but it is not a good potential energy for Malaysia because our country does not have a consistent wind speed. He also stated that biomass could be one of the alternative energy for our country instead of wind energy.
